Despite what popular opinion might suggest, generosity is a fairly common human trait. Human beings like being courteous to one another, and when push comes to shove, we can be quite generous and help others in need. One of the largest reasons that a person would not donate is simply because they do not have enough for themselves. The average American is generally able to donate occasionally, always being cautious of overdonating and running out of their own funds or personal belongings. But what about the ultra wealthy? What about the billionaires who have more money than they could spend in multiple lifetimes? I wanted to highlight their philanthropic endeavors, and list a few of the ones that have been exceptionally philanthropic.
Chances are, you’ve probably never heard of Pierre Omidyar. While he doesn’t have the public status of a Mark Zuckerberg or a Bill Gates, he is certainly wealthy. As the co-founder of eBay, Mr. Omidyar’s net worth sits at roughly $6 billion. And with that money and his connections, Omidyar founded the Omidyar Foundation, a large conglomerate of smaller philanthropic organizations that focus their individual attentions on multiple charitable causes. Comprised of Omidyar Network, HopeLab, Humanity United and Ulupono Initiative, the Omidyar Foundation has donated roughly $1 billion to charitable causes. Some of those causes include human rights and entrepreneurship.
While Pierre Omidyar might not be a household name, Ted Turner is certainly a bit more popular. And if you haven’t heard of Ted Turner himself, you’ve more than likely seen one of his company’s television shows. The former chairman and director of AOL Time Warner (now WarnerMedia) founded Turner Broadcasting System in 1965, and since then, has been acquired by the aforementioned WarnerMedia. In regards to his philanthropic endeavors, Turner has been extremely vigilant in his attempts to better the world. Currently serving as the trustee of the Turner Global Foundation and the chairman of the Turner Foundation, Ted Turner looks to improve local communities through his efforts. Turner is also well known for his donations to the UN Foundation.
Sulaiman bin Abdul Aziz Al Rajhi
After founding one of the most successful Islamic banks in the world, Al Rajhi decided to take his 10-digit net worth and donate a vast majority of it to charity. He founded the Sulaiman bin Abdul Aziz Al Rajhi Endowments Holding Company, which funds multiple educational, religious and social endeavors. In total, he’s donated $5.7 billion.
